From Surviving to Securing a Future: A Be the Key Success Story

At the Apostles’ House, every family arrives with a story—often marked by hardship, resilience, and the hope for something better. Today, we are honored to share the journey of one of our courageous guests, Unique M. who is transforming her life through determination, faith, and the support of our Be the Key workforce readiness program.

Last summer, she made the difficult decision to leave an unsafe home environment, prioritizing the safety and well-being of her two daughters, ages 15 and 9. Like many survivors of domestic violence, she arrived with limited resources, no employment, and the overwhelming responsibility of rebuilding life for her family while navigating the emotional and practical challenges of starting over.

In addition to these barriers, she is also a devoted mother caring for a child living with diabetes—an ongoing medical need that requires daily attention, stability, and access to healthcare. Despite these challenges, she remained focused on creating a better future for her children.

Through her participation in Be the Key, she committed herself to personal and professional growth. With consistent effort and support from staff, she successfully earned her SORA certification and became a licensed armed security guard—a significant milestone that opens the door to living-wage employment and long-term stability. She is now actively seeking employment in the security field and is on the path toward permanent housing, with a move anticipated in the near future.

She shared that “The Apostles’ House has been very good to me, and the program gave me the motivation to keep going.” Her words reflect the power of compassionate support combined with meaningful opportunity.

The Be the Key program, made possible through the generous support of the Prudential Foundation, provides women with the tools, certifications, and confidence needed to move from crisis to independence. Her journey is a powerful example of what happens when access to training is paired with encouragement and stability.

Her story is one of courage, perseverance, and a mother’s unwavering commitment to her children. It is also a reminder that when women are given access to opportunity, they do not just survive—they lead their families into brighter, more stable futures.

We are incredibly proud of her accomplishments and honored to walk alongside her as she continues this journey.
