Looking Back: Cherie’s Story

As we commemorate 40 years of dedicated service, we reflect on the countless lives transformed by the Apostles’ House unwavering commitment to support and empower those in need. Among these stories is one that beautifully captures our anniversary theme of “Looking Back and Moving Forward.”

Twenty-nine years ago, Cherie Frazier, along with her then, six-year-old son, found refuge within the walls of the Apostles’ House at 16-18 Grant Street. They were part of a traveling shelter program, and their stay with us lasted about five months. During this time, the Apostles’ House became a pivotal place in their lives, introducing her to recovery, although she candidly admitted she wasn’t ready for sobriety then.

Her journey into homelessness was a tragic twist of fate. Her brothers, who did not live with her, used her home mailing address and got into trouble with the law. This unfortunate misuse led to her eviction, leaving her and her son without a home. Despite these hardships, the shelter provided a stable environment and crucial support during a turbulent time.

Cherie reflects on her 5-month stay at the Apostles' House in the room she and her son Kamal stayed in almost 30 years ago.

Now 22 years sober, she has rebuilt her life and found purpose in helping others. She serves as a social worker for the City of Newark, tirelessly advocating for those who find themselves in circumstances similar to what she once faced. Additionally, she occasionally works as a dental assistant, a role she first embraced while transitioning from homelessness.

Today, her efforts in the community are vast and varied. Cherie said she “wears many capes”, a powerful testament to her resilience and her role as a servant leader. Whether she is offering guidance as a social worker, providing care as a dental assistant, or simply being a source of inspiration to those around her, she embodies the spirit of service and leadership.

Cherie’s story is one of looking back with gratitude and moving forward with determination. It embodies the very essence of our mission over the past 40 years: to provide not just a bed but a foundation for lasting change. As we celebrate this milestone, we are reminded of the profound impact of our collective efforts and the lives we have touched and continue to inspire.

Here’s to 40 years of service, countless stories of transformation, and many more years of making a difference in our community.
