Redefining Sheltering: The Power of Thoughtful Design at The Apostles’ House

In the fight against homelessness, providing temporary shelter is just the beginning. At the Apostles’ House we believe in reimagining the traditional shelter model to create spaces that not only meet basic needs but also foster dignity, comfort, and a sense of belonging. One way we do this is through our thoughtful shelter design, which prioritizes homeliness and respect for our guests.

We Embrace Warmth and Comfort

Instead of sterile, institutional environments, our rooms and apartments are designed to feel like home. We opt for wood furniture over steel bunk beds or cots, creating a warmer and more inviting atmosphere. Spacious closets provide our guests with the dignity of personal storage space, allowing them to keep their belongings safe and organized.

We Create Community Spaces

Homelessness can be isolating, but our spaces are designed to encourage social connection and community engagement. Our designated living and dining areas provide space where guests can gather, relax, and share meals together. Outdoor spaces are also available for fresh air and recreation, fostering a sense of belonging and camaraderie.

We Promote Healthy Living

Nutrition and well-being are integral to our shelter philosophy. We prioritize providing nutritious meals cooked on-site three times a day. Our kitchen areas are accessible to guests who wish to prepare their own meals, promoting autonomy and healthy eating habits. By nourishing both body and soul, we empower our guests to thrive during their stay with us.

We Respect Dignity

Every design choice we make is guided by a deep respect for the dignity and autonomy of our guests. From the layout of our rooms to the selection of furnishings, we prioritize the comfort and well-being of those we serve. By treating our guests with the same care and consideration we would want for ourselves, we hope to instill a sense of self-worth and empowerment that extends far beyond their time in our shelter.

At The Apostles’ House, we believe that everyone deserves a safe, welcoming, and dignified place to call home, even if only temporarily. Through thoughtful shelter design and compassionate care, we are working to redefine what it means to experience homelessness, one comfortable and homely space at a time.

We invite you to join hands with us in building safe, supportive environments where unsheltered mothers and their families can navigate the difficulties of homelessness and reclaim stability and control over their lives. Together, we can make a difference.
