The Apostles’ House Receives $212K FEED NJ Grant to Strengthen Food Access in Newark

We are thrilled to share exciting news with our community:
The Apostles’ House has been awarded a $212,500 grant through the New Jersey Economic Development Authority’s (NJEDA) FEED NJ Pilot Program.

This funding is part of a historic $30 million statewide initiative to expand access to healthy, affordable food in New Jersey’s most underserved neighborhoods. We are honored to be one of 50 organizations selected across the state—and grateful that our Life Pantry was recognized as a critical resource for Newark families.

Why This Matters for Our Community

For families facing food insecurity, consistent access to nutritious food is more than a necessity—it’s a lifeline.

The Life Pantry has seen a dramatic rise in need over the past year as families struggle with rising grocery costs, limited income, and the ongoing challenges of transitioning from homelessness to stability.

With this new funding, we will be able to:

  • Expand pantry hours to serve more families
  • Increase the amount of fresh fruits and vegetables available
  • Enhance partnerships with local farmers and food distributors
  • Provide paid work opportunities for shelter residents
  • Support trauma-informed services for families experiencing crisis
  •

This award allows us to meet the growing demand while maintaining a dignified, welcoming experience for every person who enters our doors.

A Step Forward for Food Justice in Newark

Food insecurity is not just about hunger—it reflects deep inequities in access, transportation, income, and affordable housing. Newark is one of New Jersey’s designated Food Desert Communities, meaning thousands of residents face daily barriers to healthy food.

The FEED NJ program is a game-changer. By investing directly in community-based organizations like ours, the State of New Jersey is strengthening local food ecosystems and ensuring families have the support they need to thrive.

Our Commitment Continues

Since 1982, The Apostles’ House has walked alongside families experiencing homelessness and hardship. Our emergency shelters, case management, pantry services, and rapid-rehousing efforts all work together to provide stability and hope. This grant doesn’t just fund a program—it fuels a mission.

We are deeply grateful to NJEDA for this partnership, and to our donors, volunteers, and community members who make our work possible every day.

How You Can Support This Work
