There is Strength in Partnership: Meeting the Needs of Our Community with Helen Keller International and Wellcare

At The Apostles’ House, we know that the work of serving families in crisis cannot be done alone. As our community continues to face the impact of benefit cuts, housing insecurity, and the ripple effects of ICE enforcement, strong partnerships are not just valuable—they’re vital.

That’s why we’re proud to highlight two recent collaborations that brought meaningful support directly to our guests and neighbors: Helen Keller International and Wellcare.

Removing Barriers to Vision Care with Helen Keller International

On July 15th and 29th, Helen Keller International’s New Jersey Vision Program visited both of our shelter locations to provide free, high-quality eye care. For many of our residents—especially those navigating homelessness, joblessness, or lapses in insurance—basic healthcare like vision services is often out of reach. This initiative brought compassionate care right to our doorsteps.

From free screenings to referrals, the program made it easier for our guests to access essential services that can significantly improve quality of life, confidence, and long-term health. We are deeply grateful for Helen Keller International’s commitment to equity and access, and we look forward to growing this partnership in the months ahead.

Nourishing the Community with Wellcare

On August 1, The Apostles’ House joined forces with Wellcare to host a community pantry event that provided nutritious food, household essentials, and helpful healthcare information. With inflation and SNAP benefit cuts pushing more families into crisis, this event was a timely response to a growing need.

A licensed Wellcare agent was also on-site to answer questions about Medicaid and Medicare Advantage plans, helping seniors and eligible residents understand their options in a welcoming, no-pressure setting.

By blending food security with healthcare awareness, this event addressed two critical needs in one safe, supportive space.

Why These Partnerships Matter Now More Than Ever

These recent collaborations reflect our commitment to offering wraparound services—from food and shelter to medical care and advocacy. As demand increases, our ability to respond with dignity and compassion depends on partnerships rooted in shared purpose and community trust.

Together with organizations like Helen Keller International and Wellcare, The Apostles’ House is building a stronger safety net for the women, children, and families we serve in Newark and beyond.

We are thankful to our partners, our staff, and every supporter who helps us build a stronger, more just community.
