When a Woman Loses Housing, Safety and Stability Can Disappear Overnight

Expanding Shelter for Women in Need in Newark

In response to the growing need for safe shelter in our community, the Apostles’ House recently received licensing approval to dedicate one of our buildings to serving single women experiencing homelessness. This step strengthens our ability to provide trauma-informed services and a safe, supportive environment for women working to rebuild their lives.

Recent data continues to show rising housing instability across New Jersey, with Essex County reporting one of the largest homeless populations in the state. As housing costs rise and affordable housing remains limited, service providers are seeing increased demand for safe shelter and supportive services for individuals seeking stability and a pathway forward.

Providing this level of care requires a strong commitment from our community. It costs approximately $500,000 each year to operate one of three Apostles’ House shelter buildings on Grant Street, covering essential expenses such as staffing, meals, utilities, maintenance, and supportive services that help women stabilize and transition toward permanent housing.

Behind every night of shelter is a community of supporters who believe that housing is a human right and that healing happens in the community.

Every Night of Shelter Matters

Safe shelter is the first step toward stability. By supporting the Apostles’ House, you help ensure that women in our community have access to a secure place to stay and the services needed to move toward permanent housing.
